In order to encourage lots of flowers to establish in our turtle dove meadow we need to remove all of the cut grass which otherwise would rot and smother any young plants trying to establish. We use these cuttings to create a variety of small compost heaps around the campsite and these go on to become homes for reptiles such as grass snakes and adders who use the heat generated to help them warm up in the morning. We are lucky in Sussex to have adders and people camping here can sometimes see one basking under one of the boards that we have dotted around the campsite.
This is not an interesting picture albeit an important one to show my friend Michael that I have actually done the work.
More interestingly one of our regular campers has started out on a Beacon bike ride around the coast of Britain to raise money for Shift MS. Good luck Ed
